High Commissioner’s SMU ‘Ambassador Series’ speech notes

High Commissioner Philip Green at SMU

Thursday 24 October 2013

On Tuesday Australian High Commissioner Philip Green was invited to be part of Singapore Management University’s ‘Ambassador Series’. The topic was ‘Australia and Asia: intensifying complementarities’.

Mr Green began by discussing how Singapore and Australia have long been partners, with the bilateral pillars of the relationship being in education, in defence and in trade.

But Singapore’s emergence as a key regional centre and changes in Asia’s development are affecting the way that Australia and Singapore can work together in the future. For instance, Asia’s growth is being challenged by questions about food and energy security; and the growth of Asia’s megacities will create new dynamics for Asian societies.

Mr Green explored what he sees as the ‘intensifying complementarities’ between Australia and Asia, and how Australia and Singapore might work together to meet the challenges and exploit the opportunities in the areas of agribusiness, energy and tourism.
